Day 11
Depart:
Phoenix, AZ 8:30am, Sunny, 56 degrees
After a great breakfast at Tom and Julie's, we headed off into the desert. Around the time we reached Yuma, the desert turned into a more Sahara type of desert with large rolling sand dunes. There were lots of people driving buggies and bikes up and down them. See more dune pictures here.
Today we went from an altitude of around 4000 feet near Phoenix to below sea level near Jacumba, and then back up to 4000 feet again. We visited the Desert Tower which overlooks the desert. This is one picture from the top. We also entered into California, which means we are in Pacific standard time, and we pay 20 cents more per gallon for gas.
Another shot of the desert from the Tower.
Behind the Desert Tower there were a bunch of rock sculptures of various animals. Click here to see more. After climbing and decending mountains for a while, we were soon out of the desert and into the green lands of San Deigo. We are pretty exhausted so we didn't do much in the city tonight, just took the light rail around town...most everything was shut down early since it's sunday.
Arrive:
San Diego, CA, 3:30pm, Sunny, 77 degrees
